The energy needs are expressed in CALORIES (symbol cal or kcal) or kilojoules. The calories are
expended in the body by the biological work and chemicals (extracting the fuel from food).
Our food rations must maintain a balance of the great nutritive principles necessary to the life. Our nutrition must be balanced to bring
the essential elements for synthesizing new tissue, repairing existing cells and the energy fuel. But it should not be forgotten that in our modern societies, food nutrition is rather too
copious. There is a problem of over-consumption (too much rich, not dietetic).
By way of illustration, the calories needed per day are :
Sedentary men = 2400 to 2700 calories (4000 to 5500 if a strength worker)
Sedentary women = 2000 to 2400 calories (3000 to 3500 if woman breast feeding)
Old man or woman = 1800 to 2000
By way of comparison, the average calories expenditure per day is
approximately of 1580 kcal for a man and 1400 for the women (basal metabolism for a
subject at absolute rest). Activities not included in these two figures, correspond to digestive work, maintaining temperature
of the body and the muscular activities, professional or sport exercises.
- If we are not a sportsman (woman), it will be necessary to walk as much as we can. To leave
the car, bus or subway before our usual stop and walk. To take stairs rather than the elevators or escalators.
- If we practices a physical and sport activities, we'll not have this problem but rather tendency to eat more to rebuild the great energy expenditure.
For burning 100 calories (2 cookies) we needs 1 hour of walk, 30 minutes of tennis. A hamburger makes 600 calories, 10
crisps make 100 calories. Make your accounts !
Certain brands have lowering the calories of most of their products. However all the products don't have the
contents split in calories and it's difficult to calculate
the total of calories eaten.
